He 111E-F In Luftwaffe Service |
The E model was based on the He111V-5, but carried two Jumo 211A-1 engines producing around 960hp. This offered improved performance over the earlier DB600-engined B model.
E-1 W.Nr. as follows:
301 - 350
551 - 590
1265 - 1289
1324 - 1334
1355 - 1364
2385 - 2414
E-3: W.Nr. 5211 - 5245
Production series based on improved E-1.
E-4 and E-5 were the same as the E-3, but with different bomb load arrangements.
A lineup of operational E models, with a nice view of the camo pattern on the wings |
"I figured out why the fuel isn't flowing- the damn valve is stuck..." Mechanics attend to an unidentified E model. |
After 1 May 1939, squadron code designations changed as well; gone were the confusing five-digit codes, to be replaced with two-digit Geschwader identifiers, an individual aircraft letter, and a Staffel code letter. Here we see an 1./KG4 "Hindenburg" He111E with the code V4+EH, with the code breaking down as follows:
V4 = KG4 "Hindenburg" E = individual aircraft letter (in white= 1., 4., or 7. Staffel) H = 1. Staffel

Hmmm, might have to rethink the one I'm building after seeing this... here's a brief explanation of the testing of the A5 rocket using the He111E as a testbed: |
No word on whether this is the same aircraft as above, but the He111 to the right (listed as a J model, but most likely an E- see above) is carrying a Henschel Hs293 missile for testing purposes. |
Another nice low-angle shot of an E, with the crew milling about. |
