Vought F4U-5NL Corsair BuNo 124692, VC-3 |
This is the Collings Foundation Corsair, as photographed on 2 February 2004, ready for flight. This has been something of a star-crossed restoration effort, through no fault of the skilled staff at American Aero Services in New Smyrna Beach, FL... on one of the first flights following her initial ground-up restoration, she was promptly ditched in the Atlantic, sinking to the seabed 60 feet thanks to the pilot forgetting to check his fuel gauges. That monumental faux pas necessitated ANOTHER teardown and rebuild, and this was finally completed last year. The Collings Foundation retained the services of renowned airshow pilot Dale "Snort" Snodgrass to do the initial test flights, and this turned out to be a very good thing... on the second post-post restoration flight, a faulty switch caused the starboard gear to not extend fully. Snort then retracted the gear again, and belly-landed the aircraft so gently that the only items requiring replacement were the prop blades and flap skins- that was it. Repairs were quickly completed (within a couple months), and she is airworthy again.
