The Bf109 In Wartime Color |
With the arguments that rage back and forth about the myriad color schemes carried by our favorite aircraft, I thought it might be instructive to provide a central place for period color photos...bearing in mind, of course, that even color film can lie! Subtle changes in the chemistry of the original negative or print over the years can result in a significant shift in the colors as shown...the best that can be hoped for is a reasonable approximation of the actual color on the aircraft.
That said, I think you'll agree that the following photos are DEFINITELY worth having a look at, and certainly give us something to think about!
Given the number of color photographs which have come to light, there will be four separate pages centering on different operational theatres, in addition to this page.

About the photo above: An interesting pic sent by Tom Fischer, this shot was taken for Signal in one of the myriad factories producing Gustavs, and is interesting for a number of reasons, not least because of the 76 tail assembly, 75 (?) fuselage, and 02 tail fillet. Another interesting point is the overpainted tailwheel fork boot, and the aluminum tail wheel. I've cleaned this up some using the flesh tones on the workers as a base; the magazine was printed on newsprint, which isn't a great color carrier, but it's still a fascinating glimpse of 109s "in the nest"!
