Bf 109E-7 W.Nr.2023

This aircraft is currently under rebuild in Eastern Europe for Jerry Yagen's Fighter Factory in Suffolk, VA.

Flown by Ofw. Walter Sommer of 8./JG5, "Black 9 + |" was lost on 27 May 1942 in combat with Hurricanes from 2 IAP over Finland.  The notes I have indicate a Lt. Kolomietsin of the 2 IAP may be involved, but I have no further information on this.  The aircraft came down near Urtjärvi, about 40km west of Murmansk.

As can be seen by the photo of the pieces loosely arranged in their intended locations, there is a substantial amount of work to be done.  Parts from other 109s are being used in the restoration as well...this is a tremendously exciting project, as Black 9 is being restored to airworthy condition!  Jerry already has a Hurricane XII and Spitfire IX (MJ730), so the display possibilities are simply delicious!  I am fortunate to live near the facility, and as you might guess, I am counting the days until she arrives... :)
